The most enjoyable way to enter the Mátra Hills is by the narrow-gauge forest train that departs from Előre station on Dobó István utca just east of the Mátra Museum. From April to late August, up to five daily trains make the 20-minute run (adult/child one-way 490/290Ft, return 895/540Ft) to Mátrafüred, 7km to the northeast. On the way back, you can get off at Farkasmály-Borpincék, where there’s a row of wine cellars, and then jump onto any bus coming down Rte 24 to return the 4km to Gyöngyös.
